My oldest (he’s 6)  has recently developed an interest in Tennis.  I suppose we can blame Wii tennis for this.  His technique is certainly entertaining.  But he has kicked my ass on occasion, goofy swing style and all.

So Friday I piled both kids into the van and took them to “rafiki” a local “indoor playground”.  The cool thing is that they have lots of comfy couches for the adults to sit at and they serve coffee/espresso – the main attraction for this coffee addict.

Shortly after arriving Bren gets all excited about the ping-pong table that is currently empty and asks if I’ll play.  Knowing his current level of coordination I figured it would be a short lived venture.

Yes it was short lived but NOT due to the reasons I originally imagined.

To set the scene…this place is MOM central.  Aside from me, there were only about 2 other men there.  Nearby was a group of chatty moms in a semi-circle of chairs that quickly became my audience.  The little one stuck close to me… the noise from playing kids was a bit much for him.

So there I am explaining how to play the game to Bren while the little one is hanging off my right leg.  I might as well have been explaining trig functions to him because he just tuned me out.  I was very clear on how you just have to lightly tap the ball and bounce it over the net to the other player.

Bren wants to serve first…he takes the ball, lifts it up and with his left hand holding the paddle, rears back and swings like he’s at freakin’ Wimbledon..”CRACK”..small white ball clears my airspace by about 3 feet and lands clear back past the chatting moms who have a good laugh while I chase the stupid ball across the floor with a toddler hanging off my pants.

My turn to serve…explaining again to my oldest on how it works. tap, bounce, over-the-net, bounce,  SLAM..this time it zips past my ear… again the walk and toddler drag bit…. Mom’s are laughing.

So after a few more rounds of playing with John McEnroe I told him we should probably do something else and we would work on getting a tennis setup.  (We have tennis courts available at a nearby park).  That should prove to be interesting.
