A new beginning

I’ve been away from blogland for a bit.  Fighting illness and the usual craziness of life edging things out.  But out of chaos comes some new order…no, not the band…a renewed plan.  I always said that Monday the 20th of January would be actual New Year’s rather than the usual day.  That seems to be taking shape.

The U.S. will inaugurate a new President near a Holiday that commemorates Martin Luther King, and celebrates diversity.  My family was able to participate in making that happen this year. A great feeling.   We may not have quite arrived  at MLK’s “Dream” but we’re getting closer.

Other good news has been developing.

When I was younger, my idea of balancing the checkbook was to ‘guesstimate’ and when the bank sent an overdraft notice, I knew not to write anymore checks.  Yeah, I know. ..

Thankfully I was lucky to marry someone who is the quintessential money nazi.  She took my pathetic credit rating and has steadily improved it.  It’s still going up!  Shortly after we were married she ‘fixed’ our situation to the level where we qualified for a mortgage.  She manages the craziness of our family budget that makes my eyes cross just looking at the spreadsheet.  Mind you, I once had oversight of a million dollar operating budget, but I had bean counters that did all the detail work as I handled the “big picture”.  For fun she regularly reviews the big financial pages and monitors wall street.  She knows more about budget practices at her job than most of her superiors. She predicted the current economic crisis occurring in the U.S. before it reached the crisis level.

Funny how the answer to life’s biggest questions sometimes lie at the end of our noses but we don’t see it because we’re distracted by something else.  Turns out that Library Science is the equivalent of watching paint dry, not to mention that we would have to move to the west coast in order for her to get a job. (Although that’s a plus in my book!)

Next, comes a labor of love – teaching children.  The noblest of all professions.  Unfortunately the most of the compensation does not come in the form of money, and it would take a good 3 years of hard work to get there.

Through a fluke she found a way to get a Graduate certificate in accounting in a very short time with credits that will count towards a graduate degree in a short amount of time.  She’ll be able to apply for some very good paying financial positions that have been regularly open this fall.  In addition she discovered more good news this morning.  There’s light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a freight train.  It won’t be a picnic in the meantime but my wife is at her best when she has a goal and a plan to get there.  Just like her mom and her sister she has the tenacity of a bull dog when she sets her mind to something.  We just have to get her on the right path.  And about that labor of love….it will always be there in some form.  Having 2 small children, her new tutoring experience and I anticipate that down the road she’ll be involved in other means for working with the little people.  But now she’ll get the qualifications where she can get paid at what she does very well…counting those beans.

And me…well a brief period of frustration has passed.  My motivations are renewed, I’m keeping my 3rd class and am getting ready to roll through another semester starting next week.

We renewed our BSU rec center pass so I can “ride” when it’s snowing outside.

Life is good.  Keep reminding me that!
