…Seems to be all the rage these days. You can’t open a newspaper without someone mentioning ‘going green’. Are people really that much more concerned about the environment? Did Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ make such an impact? Or is it just that gas and petroleum products are hitting everyone where it hurts the most? Does it really matter why?
Do you like green eggs and ham? I would not eat them here or there. I would not eat them anywhere. I would not eat green eggs and ham.
Anyway….I rode my bike to work today. It’s also “ride your bike to work week” here in the city of trees [Hmm a coincidence?] . Trees are green and so is the lawn I need to mow tomorrow. Mostly It just made sense being that the weather is nice and my place of business is not that far away.
It felt good to do but I must admit that I’m in pathetic shape. First bike ride I’ve taken since my little one was born last May. Green is also the color of my Gary Fisher mountain bike, green is the color of the moss growing on the tires and the color of slime that protects my tubes. Green is the color of my shimano bike shoes, and green is the color of the phlegm I was spitting on the way in. Green was the color of my face when I arrived. Yeah…truly sad. The nice cut lines that once defined my quads have been replaced by a nice fluffy layer of fat I attribute to beer, pizza, milk shakes and lack of riding. My legs aren’t green though. I like to think I have valid reasons…new baby, full time student, part time job. Perhaps I’ll have some extra green in my wallet by reducing our fuel consumption.
However, summer is here and I plan to get back to logging in some miles on my green machine. Perhaps I’ll eat more green salad, drink more green nutrition shakes and eat less pizza, etc. My riding legs will come back and I’ll be a much happier man.
Here’s to the color green!
