Governor Otter is proposing a flat fee for all vehicle registration and increasing it to $150.00 per vehicle, per year. This is nearly tripling what I am currently paying. Does this seem insane?
“Otter has said Idaho must address a roads-funding shortfall that is nearing $250 million and that tax or fee increases are necessary. Under the governor’s plan, car registration would go from the current tiered system that costs car owners about $73 per year on average to a flat fee system that would charge $150 per year for every vehicle.” (Idaho Statesman)
$150.00 a year may not seem like a big deal for those who have a big income, but this is a huge drain on lower income families that struggle for groceries paycheck to paycheck. To me it makes more sense to balance the increase based on the cost of the vehicle. If you’re buying a $55,000.00 Hummer H3, affording a $150-$200 yearly fee is not a big deal. Not to mention that a vehicle like that has more impact on road repairs then the little Korean economy car that I toodle around in.
If this affects you, take a moment drop a note to your local representative. Feel free to lend me your thoughts.
